A tangled garden hose left on the ground is more than an eyesore — it's a tripping hazard, a kink waiting to happen, and a fast track to a cracked hose. Wall-mounting a retractable hose reel solves all of that in one afternoon. Once it's up, your hose retracts automatically, stays off the ground, and is always ready when you need it.
This guide walks you through the complete installation process for a wall-mounted retractable hose reel, from choosing the right spot to making your first connection.
Pick a spot on an exterior wall close to your outdoor water spigot. The ideal height is between 4 and 5 feet off the ground — comfortable to reach without bending down. Make sure the hose can extend in all directions you need to water without obstruction.
Tip: If your wall is masonry or brick, you'll need masonry drill bits and wall anchors rated for outdoor use.
Hold the mounting bracket against the wall at your chosen height. Use a level to make sure it's perfectly horizontal, then use a pencil to mark the screw hole positions. Double-check the marks are level before drilling.
Drill holes at your marked positions using the appropriate drill bit for your wall type. If you're mounting into studs, no anchors are needed. For drywall or masonry, insert the appropriate wall anchors before driving in the screws.
Align the bracket with the drilled holes and drive in the screws firmly. Give the bracket a firm tug to confirm it's secure — it needs to support the weight of the reel plus a full hose.
Most retractable hose reels use a quick-release mounting system. Slide or click the reel body onto the bracket according to your model's instructions. The 180° swivel bracket on Relhost reels lets you rotate the reel after mounting to point the hose outlet in the most convenient direction.
Attach the inlet hose (usually a short leader hose included with the reel) from the reel's water inlet to your outdoor spigot. Hand-tighten the fittings first, then use a wrench for a final quarter-turn. Do not overtighten — this can damage the rubber washers.
Turn on the water supply slowly and check all connections for leaks. Pull the hose out to its full length, then release it — the spring auto-rewind should retract it smoothly. Test the any-length lock by pulling the hose to your desired length and giving it a slight tug back to lock it in place.
A quality retractable hose reel makes the whole process straightforward. Relhost hose reels come with all mounting hardware included, a pre-attached leader hose, and a slow-return auto-rewind system that prevents the hose from snapping back. Available in 5/8" x 65ft, 5/8" x 100ft, and 1/2" options to suit any garden size.
